Job Responsibilities
The Microbiology Instructor performs the following functions:
- Teaching Performance: Provides students with appropriate course materials, adheres to course competencies, maintains organization and preparedness, teaches and tests relevant content, varies delivery to meet different learning styles, provides feedback, maintains a positive environment.
- Student Advisement: Provides academic guidance, maintains office hours, cooperates with the advising team, assists students in setting and meeting educational goals, takes advantage of advising training, uses computer resources to access data and advise students, knows institutional policies, procedures, and programs, makes referrals and conducts follow-up, deals with confidential information with discretion.
- Instructional Development: Prepares and maintains competency-based course syllabi and support materials, assists with textbook selection, participates in professional development planning, develops annual professional development plan.
- College and/or Other Community Service: Promotes the College, assists in recruitment and placement, cooperates with and participates in projects and activities, serves on advisory committees, supports continuing education program.
- Professional Development: Keeps current in the teaching field, develops annual professional development plan, participates in appropriate courses, seminars, and workshops.
- Instructional Management: Maintains required and appropriate records and files, submits reports accurately and timely, practices effective classroom management, prioritizes duties and uses time wisely, maintains current files for courses, handles student work and records professionally.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
- Master’s degree in Biology or Microbiology or a Master’s degree in a related field with 18 graduate hours in Biology or Microbiology.
- At least one year of previous teaching experience is required.
- Preferred qualifications: Microbiology and community college experience preferred. Skilled in aseptic technique, staining and microscopy, biochemical testing and identification of microbes. Knowledge of instructional methodologies and alternative delivery methods. Communication skills to interact verbally and in writing with students, peers, administrators, and the general public. Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative, working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and other professional organizations. Ability to work flexible hours and evenings as needed.
