Duties Summary

Positions in the Microbiologist series supervise and/or perform professional scientific work in the detection, isolation, identification, cultivation, use and control of microorganisms. The Microbiologist IV is a senior, fully independent worker level in the series. He/she conducts special investigations or research projects in one or more specialized fields of microbiology in a laboratory; and/or supervises and participates in the activity of one or more areas in the field of microbiology; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • Legal Authorization To Work
    • The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
  • Basic Education
    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in microbiology, biology, molecular biology, molecular cell biology, medical technology, medical laboratory science, or a closely related science major.
    • Coursework must include a lecture and laboratory course in each of the following: Chemistry such as inorganic, qualitative, organic, or similar; and At least two (2) subject areas related to the study of microorganisms such as those listed below: Bacteriology, immunology, serology, mycology, parasitology, molecular biology, molecular cell biology or virology. Food, water, dairy, soil, industrial, public health, agriculture, or applied bacteriology; or applied microbiology; or Genetics, physiology, metabolism, animal or plant physiology or pathology, cell biology, biochemistry, biophysical chemistry.
  • Specialized Experience
    • Two (2) years of professional experience in the detection, isolation, identification, cultivation, use and/or control of microorganisms. Such experience may have been gained in such scientific disciplines as bacteriology, immunology, serology, mycology, parasitology, virology or other related areas of science. At least one (1) year of the required experience must have been comparable to the next lower level in the State service.
  • Supervisory Aptitude
    • Supervisory aptitude rather than actual supervisory experience may be accepted. Supervisory aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects of supervision; by serving as a group or team leader; or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exist; or by the completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; and/or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.
  • Licensure Requirement
    • Applicants must possess or be eligible to obtain, a current Clinical Laboratory Specialist(CLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) License issued by the State of Hawaii, Department of Health.
  • Substitutions Allowed
    • Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements will apply.
  • Quality of Experience
    • Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant's overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that he/she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he is being considered.
