Microbiologist I

About the role
The Microbiologist I is responsible for the testing of samples using various microbiological analyses. This position provides analytical support for the lab by ensuring that laboratory procedures are performed within specified quality guidelines, serves as a technical resource, and supports method and process implementations.
Responsibilities
- Follow appropriate methods and SOPs on all tasks; maintain quality control records.
- Read, calculate, and record data in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Perform rapid test methods and confirmation tests on suspect samples to identify bacterial strains.
- Read, enter, and evaluate process control samples.
- Maintain knowledge of LIMS required to complete job responsibilities.
- Support root cause analysis investigations and suggest appropriate corrective actions.
- Weigh samples, prepare agar, and track client/sample identification on plates.
- Pipette sample solutions and pour agar into plates or tubes to initiate growth processes.
- Prepare samples for analysis by recording, weighing, and blending.
- Read, calculate, and record analysis data to produce client reports; correct discrepancies on worksheets.
- Support corporate quality and continuous improvement processes.
- Support department inventory management system.
- Participate in cleaning schedules and maintain retain samples as required.
- Perform preventative maintenance and basic troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
- Update equipment records on forms or in software systems as needed.
- Keep up-to-date on assigned training and adhere to all safety policies.
- Support laboratory management in the implementation, maintenance, and improvement of the management system.
- Perform other related tasks as needed.
- Behave and operate in an ethical and Code of Conduct compliant manner at all times.
Requirements
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends, specifically Saturday & Sunday.
- Basic knowledge of microbiology to accurately perform testing procedures and obtain correct results.
- Basic chemistry knowledge to prepare media to sample specifications.
- Basic knowledge of food science to analyze microbiological content of samples.
- Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent work experience.
Skills
- Analytical skills to complete analysis procedures and determine microorganism concentration.
- General knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to process client data.
- Physical dexterity for manipulating samples.
- Basic knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and practices.
- Interpersonal skills to effectively work within teams.
Work Environment
The incumbent works in a laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control. Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials will occur. Safety equipment such as gloves, laboratory coat, and eyeglasses may need to be worn depending on the testing process. The incumbent may use the autoclave daily and must continuously lift analysis materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Extended time spent in a standing position is expected. The ability to detect slight variations in shades of color is required.
Pay
$20.00 - $22.00 hourly USD
