About the role

This position is grant funded. Therefore, it is solely dependent of availability of grant funds.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts laboratory services in the areas of hematology, serology/urinalysis, chemistry and/or microbiology, and performs generalist proficiency in all areas of the laboratory.
  • Oversees instrument validation, quality control, proficiency testing, and equipment operations.
  • Maintains parts, reagents and supplies for all laboratory operations.
  • Participates in public health projects related to Laboratory activities.
  • Develops and provides information on Laboratory recommendations, updates, regulations, policies, and procedures, such as those aligned with CDC, CLIA, Joint Commission and/or CAP.
  • Performs technical procedures proficiently in accordance with laboratory standards.
  • Performs maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration procedures related to each test performed.
  • Analyzes Laboratory operations, review reports, makes recommendations, and provides justifications when needed to improve Laboratory program outcomes.
  • Reports critical results to appropriate personnel and to appropriate health officials.
  • Aids in developing procedures for processing specimens to ensure the accuracy of the results, proper handling of specimens, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Supports Laboratory information system on test build, validation, troubleshooting, and supporting of deliverables, attending LIS meetings and support when required.
  • Supports epidemiological disease investigations through laboratory operations.
  • Supports laboratory specimen operations for testing, packaging, handling, and/or shipping.
  • Processes SARS-CoV-2 samples for quantitative RT-PCR analysis and qualitative SARS-CoV-2 analysis.
  • Supports the wastewater surveillance program by processing, or shipping wastewater samples.
  • Performs instrument maintenance procedures as required.
  • Maintains and performs inventory.
  • Utilizes PCR software and data analysis software to perform quantitative RT-PCR.
  • Maintains cleanliness and proper working order of the BSL-3 laboratory to ensure testing is performed in a sterile and regulated environment.
  • Performs drinking and wastewater bacteriology tests under the supervision of certified MTs.
  • Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use.
  • Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited* college or university in Clinical Laboratory Science, Environmental Sciences, Public Health, Microbiology, Medical Technology, Chemistry, or related health field.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in microbiology, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or similar related field experience.
  • Council of Higher Education Accreditation (C.H.E.A.) Proof of TB Test/Screening will be required to be presented prior to employment.
  • Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
  • Medical Laboratory Technologist Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or equivalent must be obtained within 12 months of employment.
