Responsibilities
- Supervises all clinical and ancillary personnel involved in Endoscopy, Operating Rooms and Sterile Processing.
- Makes sure staff are on time and keeps records of their attendance.
- Communicates with staff about their work hours each day.
- Completes evaluations of staff members in collaboration with the Director.
- Balances the need for staff and avoids overtime when possible.
- Serves as the main point of contact between the surgical staff and the surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other service providers.
- Reports on the status of surgical nursing care to institutional planners.
- Collaborates with the management team to set and maintain standards for the Operating Room.
- Schedules and attends weekly meetings with the Administrator and Director of Nursing.
- Collaborates with the Admin., DON, BOM, Scheduler, and Pre-op/PACU Manager to ensure correct staffing and supplies for all cases.
- Monitors surgeon availability, on-time arrival, and informs surgeons of any delays.
- Updates the Electronic Health Record to reflect patient flow and accuracy.
- Collaborates with the Materials Management department on equipment, implants, and trays needed for upcoming cases.
- Coordinates X-Ray needs and communicates with the Scheduler and Radiation Technicians.
- Evaluates staffing needs based on patient acuity and adjusts as necessary.
- Assists with patient care when required, including turning over rooms and providing a safe environment.
- Collaborates with SPD/OR/Materials for efficiency.
- Aids physicians in mastering the electronic health record, documentation, and surgical notes.
- Develops and maintains policies and procedures to ensure quality nursing care.
- Allocates and administers the Operating Room nursing budget to ensure adequate resources.
- Maintains regulatory compliance for the Operating Room and ensures staff compliance.
- Collects and analyzes data from procedures requiring surgical nursing care and develops plans based on the data.
- Consults with the Medical Director on medical concerns.
- Collaborates with the DON and Safety Committee to develop and monitor orientation policies and procedures.
- Schedules with the Director of Nursing and Director of Facilities to conduct quarterly evacuation and fire drills.
- Assists the DON in coordinating employee injury/illness programs.
- Reviews variance reports with the DON and looks for trends or concerns to improve practice.
- Performs quarterly and yearly evaluations of all staff to confirm compliance with policies and personnel policies.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned and needed within the Operating Room Complex.
Relationships
- Serves as the formal liaison between the members of the surgical staff and the surgeons & Anesthesiologists along with any contracted service providers & sales representatives supporting the daily cases.
- Represents the Operating Room nursing function in institutional planning and provides periodic reports on the status of surgical nursing care being provided in the Surgery Center.
- Collaborates with the Director of Nursing and other members of the management team to establish and maintain standards and expectations for the Operating Room.
- Collaborates with the Admin., DON, BOM, Scheduler, and Pre-op/PACU Manager to assure correct staffing and supplies for all cases.
- Schedules and attends a weekly meeting with the Administrator and Director of Nursing.
