About the role
This role is responsible for the implementation of Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) strategies to improve asset reliability, safety, and operational performance. The individual will analyze equipment failure modes, maintenance data, and operational risks to determine the most effective maintenance practices and intervals. The position requires facilitating RCM analyses, identifying opportunities to reduce unplanned failures, and ensuring maintenance programs are aligned with business objectives. The successful candidate will track performance metrics, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and support a culture of proactive asset management.
Based out of the Union Pacific Center in Omaha, NE, you will travel up to 30% and work in a diesel shop environment to support projects. You will help improve locomotive availability, reliability, and performance for Union Pacific and its customers. The role includes providing technical guidance to employees and management on locomotive troubleshooting, work communication, equipment status, productivity, and process improvements. You will develop, manage, and implement projects to ensure locomotives are safe, productive, efficient, and reliable, while researching and establishing locomotive plans, standards, technology, and programs. The position also provides recommendations for meeting regulatory requirements for the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and other agencies.
Responsibilities
- Ensure key process indicators (safety, reliability, quality, and productivity) are met and improved.
- Provide design, data analysis, research, and testing for locomotives and components to improve life cycle cost.
- Offer general help and troubleshooting assistance to Mechanical Locomotive System & Regional shops.
- Assist system repair shops to ensure locomotives meet Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and other regulatory requirements.
- Support other Union Pacific departments, including the Law Department, to interpret and implement locomotive regulations.
- Plan, direct, and coordinate locomotive maintenance planning, standards, programs, and technology for Union Pacific's locomotive fleet.
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and FRA.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and customers while effectively handling conflict situations.
- Ensure craft work and facility business processes are done safely and to standard.
- Maintain integrity in reporting, expenses, and personal demeanor.
- Solve problems when work or business processes cannot be done to standard using the eight-step problem-solving process to eliminate waste and variability.
- Lead, develop, and engage team leaders and craft persons in UP Way methodology.
- Apply subject matter expertise to resolve the root cause of impactful train incidents, with a focus on electrical subsystems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree or comparable work experience.
- 3 or more years of work experience OR participation in the Union Pacific Operations Management Training or Field Management Training (OMT/FMT) program.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline.
Physical and Mental Job Requirements
- Requires ability to get on and off locomotives.
Work Conditions
- Primarily office environment.
- Approximately 30% travel.
Pay
The salary range for this position is $105,000 - $175,000. The final salary will be set based on experience, education, specialty, and training. This position is eligible for participation in the Union Pacific Annual Compensation Program, which includes annual salary adjustments, cash incentive bonuses, and stock equity based on individual and company performance.
