About the Role

The position is a new Manager Design Engineering 1 role on the Submarine Design Team (Department E35), focusing on the platform side (excluding the Propulsion Plant) of the U.S. Navy’s next Fast Attack Submarine, SSN(X). The manager will lead designers from several disciplines—arrangements, outfitting, and electrical—through R&D, concept, and detailed design of platform component arrangements, outfitting, and electrical systems. The role involves interfacing with NNS managers, engineers, program office representatives, and other internal leadership, as well as external partners such as Electric Boat Corp, NUWC, and NAVSEA.

Daily Responsibilities

• Design major components or major portions of functional systems to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations.
• Develop basic data and create preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes for design proposals.
• Investigate design factors including ease of manufacture, material and equipment availability, interchangeability, replaceability, strength‑weight efficiency, contractual specifications, and cost.
• Coordinate with other organizations affected by design development.
• Produce layouts of complex assemblies and detailed parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures.
• Review completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensions.
• Identify design errors, omissions, and deficiencies; recommend revisions or improvements to responsible engineers or designers.

Requirements

• Design Apprentice certification or an Associate’s degree in Design with six (6) years of progressive professional and/or supervisory experience; or
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline with four (4) years of progressive professional and/or supervisory experience; or
• Master’s degree in a relevant discipline with two (2) years of progressive professional experience.

Pay

Estimated base pay range: $91,000 – $114,000, dependent on experience, qualifications, and other job‑related factors.

Schedule

Full‑time, 1st shift. Travel required 10%–25% of the time.
