About the Role

The Meter Mechanic assists Industrial Water Meter Mechanics in the field to remove, replace, test, inspect, and perform repairs on water meters 1½ inches and larger throughout the Metropolitan Utilities District service area. This role supports the yearly downloads of pressure recorders and conducts repairs and tests on gas and water meters, regulators, and security valves. The Meter Mechanic also completes field repairs of encoder receiver transmitters (ERT) on gas and water meters and participates in the District’s meter sampling program.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Industrial Water Meter Mechanic in testing, repairing, maintaining, overhauling, and calibrating industrial water meters (1½ inches and larger) using properly calibrated equipment.
  • Install, replace, and troubleshoot electronic components of gas and water meters.
  • Maintain accurate information on District work/maintenance orders and ERT module data.
  • Perform scheduled and repair maintenance on District meters, including testing, cleaning, disassembly/assembly, painting, proving, tagging, installing, and storing water and gas meters and related appurtenances.
  • Operate and maintain a vacuum-blast machine to sandblast meters.
  • Operate hand trucks, forklifts, and other material handling equipment.
  • Repair and test gas and water meters, regulators, and security valves.
  • Assist in yearly downloads of pressure recorders.
  • Assist Industrial Gas Meter Technician with large gas and water meters and appurtenances in the shop.
  • Under supervision, repair gas and water meters, regulators, and security valves.
  • Clean and maintain all equipment used in cleaning, testing, and repairing meters and appurtenances.
  • Complete service orders using enterprise software and established policies and procedures.
  • Perform physical requirements of the position.
  • Assist in annual inventory of meters and appurtenances.
  • Comply with confined space entry procedures, including permitting, air monitoring, air exchange, and evacuation plans, and ensure vault preparation.
  • Conduct safety inspections of assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • Drive District vehicle.
  • Perform a variety of other duties as assigned.
  • Understand and comply with all District policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Minimum of 1 year of proven work experience demonstrating mechanical aptitude.
  • Valid driver’s license (must maintain).
  • Forklift Certification (must obtain and maintain within 60 days of hire).
  • Hearing (audiogram) testing upon hire.
  • Pre-employment and/or post-offer physical demands screening upon hire.
  • Covered under Department of Transportation (DOT) Drug and Alcohol testing provisions, including post-offer, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, follow-up, and return-to-duty testing.
  • Covered under DOT Operator Qualification (OQ) Rule; must acquire and maintain qualifications for all covered tasks under the District’s Operator Qualification Plan within 90 days.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of gas and water metering devices and software.
  • Experience in water supply plumbing, including sweating joints, cutting pipe, routing and removal of pipe, meter installations, and other service line plumbing devices.
  • Ability to work independently and complete service orders using enterprise software and established policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and welding torches common to the plumbing field.
  • Ability to accurately draft and maintain records both manually and electronically.
  • Demonstrated accuracy in performing mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals, installation instructions, and operating instructions for testing equipment.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of District residential, commercial, and industrial water meters and appurtenances.
  • Preferred: Demonstrated knowledge and experience in water supply plumbing.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to schedule and meet deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in English to assist internal and external customers, coworkers, and management professionally.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Proficiency with personal computers, tablets, and electronic devices, including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) and enterprise-wide software (e.g., SAP).
  • Ability to learn new or upgraded computer software as required.

Work inside and outside in all weather conditions and terrain for extended periods of time. Physical demands include:
