About the role

This position in the Metallurgy area seeks to provide technical support to the Process Control team through operational data analysis, control system reviews, and support for automation and process optimization initiatives. The role is aimed at recent graduates in Computer Engineering or Systems Engineering with an interest in developing in highly automated industrial environments, working with control systems, process databases, and digital platforms in close collaboration with metallurgy, automation, and instrumentation teams.

Responsibilities

  • Support the analysis of historical and real-time data from process control systems.
  • Participate in the review and structuring of process information to identify operational improvement opportunities.
  • Provide support in the configuration and documentation of control systems and digital tools used in the plant.
  • Work with Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and process data platforms (e.g., PI System / AVEVA PI).
  • Support digitalization, automation, and continuous improvement initiatives in industrial environments.
  • Develop basic analyses using programming tools and databases.
  • Prepare technical reports and simple dashboards to support decision-making.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (metallurgy, automation, operations).

Requirements

Education

Recently obtained university degree in:

  • Computer Engineering
  • Systems Engineering
  • Data Science
  • Software Engineering
  • Or related fields with a focus on industrial systems

Experience and Technical Knowledge

  • 0 to 2 years of professional experience (internships, academic projects, or traineeships considered).
  • Basic or intermediate knowledge in:
    • Programming (Python or similar language).
    • Database management and structuring (basic SQL desirable).
    • Data analysis and programming logic.
  • Interest in working in industrial environments and process control systems.
  • Ability to understand technical processes and complex systems.
  • Intermediate English level (reading technical documentation and software usage).

Desirable Skills

  • Basic knowledge of industrial automation or process control.
  • Familiarity with DCS, SCADA, or HMI systems (academic or introductory level).
  • University experience in data analysis, machine learning, or process optimization projects.
  • Familiarity with visualization or analysis tools (Power BI, PI System, Minitab, or others).
  • Interest in developing a professional career in the mining or process industry.

Location

Mining site – Cobre Panamá (residential modality).

Contract Type

6-month contract with possibility of extension.

First Quantum Minerals has initiated a specific recruitment process in Panama to support activities related to the Preservation and Safe Management (PSM) program, as well as the processing of previously extracted and stockpiled material at Cobre Panamá. This process does not represent the reactivation of mining operations. The published positions aim to ensure the safe management of the site, environmental protection, regulatory compliance, and responsible handling of existing materials during this phase.
