About the role
The Materials Engineering department seeks a Metallurgy Laboratory Technician to support new technology and material evaluations, submarine construction, Welding Engineering, and Materials Engineering. The position requires proficiency in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Responsibilities
- Preparation, evaluation, and documentation of macro- and micro specimens
- Use of digital microscopic equipment
- Mechanical test specimen layout
- Mechanical property testing
- Specification interpretation
- Shipyard acid etching
Requirements
- Visual acuity necessary for most assignments
- Passes eye test for preparation and evaluation of weld metallographic specimens
- Trained in acid etching for shipyard support
- Frequent interaction with Operations, Welding Engineering, and Materials Engineering customers required
- Basic understanding of metallurgical principles desirable
Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED
- 2+ years of experience working as a technician in a mechanical testing laboratory
- Prior experience preferred: 5+ years of experience working as a technician in a mechanical testing laboratory
- Experience with grinding, polishing, and acid etching metallic specimens
- Chemistry knowledge
- Basic Microsoft Office product knowledge
- Basic cutting and machining knowledge
- Basic welding knowledge
