Metallurgy Lab Technician (T/A Chem)

About the role

The Materials Engineering department seeks a Metallurgy Laboratory Technician to support new technology and material evaluations, submarine construction, Welding Engineering, and Materials Engineering. The position requires proficiency in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

• Preparation, evaluation, and documentation of macro- and micro specimens
• Use of digital microscopic equipment
• Mechanical test specimen layout
• Mechanical property testing
• Specification interpretation
• Shipyard acid etching

Requirements

• Visual acuity necessary for most assignments
• Passes eye test for preparation and evaluation of weld metallographic specimens
• Trained in acid etching for shipyard support
• Frequent interaction with Operations, Welding Engineering, and Materials Engineering customers required
• Basic understanding of metallurgical principles desirable

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED
• 2+ years of experience working as a technician in a mechanical testing laboratory
• Prior experience preferred: 5+ years of experience working as a technician in a mechanical testing laboratory
• Experience with grinding, polishing, and acid etching metallic specimens
• Chemistry knowledge
• Basic Microsoft Office product knowledge
• Basic cutting and machining knowledge
• Basic welding knowledge
