About the role

The Metallurgical Engineering Specialist serves as one of Molex’s leading subject matter experts in the field of metals and related processes. In a manner and direction consistent with the overall group strategy and the Technology Leader’s specific vision, this individual is responsible for managing aspects of complex technical projects or programs related to metals or process technology invention, selection, specification, evaluation, deployment, failure analysis, and / or testing. The Metallurgical Engineering Specialist is also expected to support technology transfer and knowledge sharing with suppliers, external collaborators, and customers.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and deliver on projects configured to address the strategic technical opportunities identified through 1) direct engagement with internal stakeholders from product development and manufacturing, 2) group technology track roadmaps, and 3) other identified technical needs of the enterprise.
  • Support the product development and manufacturing teams with materials application engineering support, leadership of optimized material selection practices, support on design reviews and new product development challenges, advanced materials and manufacturing process related problem solving and failure analysis, and technical engagement and alignment with the raw material supply base.
  • Discover relevant research and development activities around metals in universities and industry through literature searches, seminars, conferences, supplier visits, and external courses. Ability to gauge potential application of these developments within Molex. Develop and deploy these applications until successful handoff within the company.
  • Create, identify, and help secure intellectual property through patents, publications, and / or trade secrets.
  • Lead problem solving and failure analysis consultations, coordination of work activities with internal and external analysis / testing facilities, and reporting of results, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Review and update existing Molex Engineering Specifications related to raw materials. Create new Engineering specifications and best practices as required to ensure strong and robust engineering practices related to raw materials and their processing enterprise wide.
  • Audit operational capability and opportunities for expansion of the pertinent experimental, analytical, and testing equipment tied to metals.
  • Coordinate and prepare knowledge shares, technical seminars, and meetings both independently and in support of management.
  • Understand, support, and contribute to current Molex Total Quality Management (TQM), Six Sigma, International Standards Organization (ISO) and Environmental, and/or Health and Safety (EH&S) Management Systems by following stated policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge on material science, particularly metallurgy and its associated manufacturing processes, including stamping, machining, injection molding, electroplating and material joining processes.
  • Prior experience with a range of materials test / analytical tools such as SEM/EDX, hardness testing, tensile testing, and metallography.
  • Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Materials Science, Metallurgic Engineering, or similar technical specialty.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver tangible value on projects tied to metals application in products, metals and/or processing in manufacturing and/or metals research and development.
  • Prior experience with project management, including the application of statistical tools, such as SPC and DOE, to practical problems or research programs.
  • Ability to lead, manage and successfully bring innovative projects to closure.
  • Ability to seek out and share knowledge to create high impact innovative solutions.
  • Ability to effectively engage in academic and business settings.
  • Ability to identify and solve complex technical problems in an organized, logical, and effective manner even when confronted with limited information, significant uncertainties, time pressure or the necessity to consult with other experts.
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams focused on meeting program objectives.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with global personnel at all levels of the corporate organization, including interaction with external resources.
  • Writing and presentation skills that are consistent with the departmental and corporate standards for formalized communication, including project plans, final reports, problem solving tools, and executive reviews.
  • Considerable persuasion, tact, and negotiation skills utilized across departments and regions of the corporation.

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Experience providing electromechanical product design engineers with materials application engineering support and providing product design engineers and manufacturing process engineers with advanced problem solving / failure analysis support.
  • PH.D. in Materials Science, Metallurgic Engineering or similar specialty.
  • Demonstrated ability to impact corporate intellectual property as evidenced by a record of patents, publications, and / or trade secrets around metals or its associated processes.
  • First-hand knowledge of the tools and techniques for predicting product-level performance based upon material properties and manufacturing process strategies.
  • Prior work experience at a relevant metal supplier in positions related to either application engineering, process engineering or research and development.
  • Some first-hand experience with the type of high-speed, fine-dimensional tolerance stamping manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to operate and understand fundamentals of FEA related software.
  • Demonstrated Ability to work with metallurgical knowledge in the development of new copper alloys, the improvement of existing chemistry and/or improve processing capability.
  • Ability to understand the limits, risks and opportunities for improvement around the Process Failure Mode Element Analysis (PFMEA) of a metals rolling mill and/or other metals related manufacturing processes.

Pay

$140,000 - $180,000 per year. This role is eligible for variable pay, issued as a monetary bonus or in another form.
