About the role

This position is responsible for underwriting and structuring complex credit transactions with minimal oversight. The Credit Underwriter exercises independent judgment and discretion to approve merchant exposure while ensuring adherence to credit policies, guidelines, and applicable regulatory requirements. This role serves as the point of contact for driving commercial and small business credit solutions for clients, including customer-facing responsibilities such as obtaining financial information, articulating the bank’s position, and negotiating relationships.

The role reports to the Merchant Services Global Banking Credit Manager or Executive and supports Global Banking Merchant clients with annual revenue of $5MM+.

Responsibilities

  • Performs underwriting and structuring of complex credit transactions.
  • Researches and delivers financial, industry, economic, and other analysis to recommend and approve merchant exposure.
  • Negotiates relationships and approves merchant exposure while ensuring adherence to credit policies, guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provides ongoing coaching and support to Sales partners and other Credit Products team members to build credit acumen.
  • Negotiates with client teams on credit terms, performs full underwriting analysis, and prepares deal justification.
  • Performs financial, economic, industry, and other analysis of clients and prospects.
  • Designs and executes credit solutions and actively manages asset quality.
  • Collaborates with Relationship Managers, Global Merchant Specialists, Treasury Solutions Officers, and other product partners to assess client needs and deliver integrated solutions.
  • Provides credit underwriting, deal structure support, analysis, and decision recommendations for complex transactions.
  • Serves as a Credit approver in conjunction with Risk Management based on the credit approval grid and drives the internal credit approval process.
  • Structures and negotiates client merchant services contracts.
  • Takes on customer-facing responsibilities, including obtaining background and financial information and articulating the bank’s position.
  • Spreads financial statements in Moody’s Credit Lens and reviews/prepares Risk Rating scorecards.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of solid experience in commercial underwriting (Business Banking, Middle Market, Large Corporate, Leveraged Finance, Financial Sponsors, or other highly complex credits).
  • Experience performing financial analysis, spreading financials, completing risk ratings, structuring approvals, and portfolio management.
  • Experience preparing and completing a variety of Risk Rating scorecards.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and technical skills, including financial accounting, modeling, and loan structuring.
  • Prior experience in a high-volume commercial credit production environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of underwriting Merchant Services exposure.
  • Experience reviewing and spreading financial statements in Moody’s Credit Lens.
  • BS/BA degree or equivalent experience.

Schedule

1st shift (United States of America), 40 hours per week.

Minimum Education

High School Diploma / GED / Secondary School or equivalent.
