About the role
The Mentor plays a key role in supporting the professional growth and development of in-service, conditionally licensed teachers during their field experiences in a special education environment. This individual serves as a liaison between CCBC and partner schools, providing mentorship and feedback based on evaluating candidates’ teaching performance in accordance with program and state licensure requirements.
Responsibilities
- Observe in-service teachers in K–12 special education classroom settings and provide constructive feedback.
- Conduct formal evaluations of teacher candidates using program rubrics and observation tools.
- Collaborate with in-school mentors and school administrators to support teachers’ development.
- Hold regular conferences (in-person or virtual) with teacher candidates to reflect on teaching practices, progress, and areas for improvement.
- Document candidate progress and submit timely evaluations, observation notes, and required reports.
- Maintain ongoing communication with the MAAPP Director and teacher education department staff.
- Attend orientation sessions, trainings, and supervision meetings as required.
- Facilitate in-school mentor training and support groups on a monthly basis.
- Support candidates in implementing culturally responsive and inclusive teaching strategies.
- Promote professional ethics and effective classroom management aligned with program expectations.
Requirements
- Minimum of a master’s degree in education.
- Minimum of 5 years of K–12 teaching experience in Special Education.
- 2 years experience mentoring teacher candidates.
- Valid Maryland teaching certification/ license (APC/APL) in Special Education (Elementary or Secondary).
- Ability to travel to school sites or conduct remote observations if needed.
Preferred
- Familiarity with state licensure requirements and performance-based assessments (e.g., edTPA).
- Experience with diverse school settings and commitment to equity in education.
