About the role
The Mentor/Advisor Specialist (MAS) serves as mentor/advisor for students in the Project-Beyond-2 (PB2) program. Additionally, the MAS supports structured project and peer mentoring activities for project participants and community partners in the PB2 Program.
Responsibilities
- Provide individual advising and mentoring for project participants
- Support professional nurse mentoring program for project participants (PP)
- Cookordinate structured activities for project participants
- Support summer Preadmission Intensive Program for incoming freshmen
- Conduct group & one-to-one mentoring training sessions for project participants and mentors
- Track mentoring activities, including peer mentoring, & maintain a mentor-mentee network
- Link students with professional minority nursing organizations and community partners
- Cookordinate and keep records of structured activities for BSN participants (BSNPP)
- Cookordinate and keep records of efforts made in addressing social determinants of education & health (SDE /SDH)
- Support summer Preliminary Academic Intensive (PAI) program for incoming freshman
- Advise BSNPP, assist with scholarship applications
- Track academic progress electronically of BSNPP & offer additional individualized academic supports as needed
- Attend MUCN sessions for enrolled nursing students to foster early, direct contact & encourage project participation (e.g., open houses, orientations)
- Aid Project Director (PD) to seek future funding for project sustainability
- Aid with preparation of meeting materials including creation of presentations consisting of current research and resources, newsletters, handouts & other related materials, as well as printing, binding & collating
- Aid with room reservations, preparation of agendas & minutes, & logistics as assigned
- Maintain system for loaning and checking-out study aids (i.e., books, reference guides, anatomical models)
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Licensed Registered Nurse (RN), with academic teaching and program planning and coordination experience needed, including clinical precepting
- 3 years of relevant and related experience, including some teaching, program development, and clinical precepting
- Extensive experience with mentoring diverse students required
- Experience working with social determinants of education and health (SDE /SDH) & diverse populations is critical for position
- Strong collaboration, communication, presentation, & interpersonal skills required
- Successful candidate will have a positive attitude & good communication skill, while upholding service excellence with all team members, student participants, and community partners
- Exhibit individual initiative; work independently as part of the well-coordinated team
- Be technically proficient & accurate, and possess attention to detail
