Mental Health Worker - Pedi

About the role

Under the general supervision of the Clinical Manager Hasbro 6, you are responsible for the care and safety of assigned children. You will contribute to the formulation of a therapeutic milieu treatment plan and implement, observe, and document this program under the direction of the multidisciplinary team. This role provides services to medically compromised and emotionally disturbed children and adolescents.

Responsibilities

• Participates in maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment, including leading a group of 6-8 pediatric patients with severe medical and psychosocial issues through their structured day.
• Handles crisis situations safely and effectively, intervening in disruptive or self-destructive behaviors with timely therapeutic responses.
• Reports critical incidents verbally to the Registered Nurse and documents them in the medical record.
• Sets consistent and supportive therapeutic limits within hospital, unit, and departmental guidelines.
• Participates in the development and operation of milieu therapy care plans for assigned patients, documenting patient observation levels as ordered.
• Supports meal plans for patients with eating disorders or specific nutritional goals related to chronic medical illness.
• Organizes and participates in therapeutic and recreational activities tailored to the psychosocial and developmental needs of children aged 6-18.
• Completes initial milieu assessments within 24 hours and contributes to ongoing care plan development in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
• Communicates individual patient treatment plans to the multidisciplinary team throughout the day for necessary clinical modifications.
• Models effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team.
• Adheres to hospital, departmental, and unit policies and procedures, including QA indicators and responsibilities.
• Attends peer review and staff meetings as assigned.

Requirements

• Baccalaureate in Psychology or a related Human Services field.
• Current CPR certification.
• Current RIH Crisis Management certification or current enrollment.
• Theoretical understanding of children within families and the social/developmental issues in medically ill children and teens.
• Understanding of body image, self-esteem, and identity development issues particular to teenagers.
• Knowledge and skills to provide care considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns.
• One year of recent (within 3 years) experience in a pediatric environment for ages 6-18, with experience in medically compromised and/or emotionally impaired children.

Work Environment

General hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with children with emotional and behavioral disorders.

Schedule

Night shift: 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
