Mental Health Therapist

Incumbent will be under the direct supervision of the Director of Behavioral Health. Provides, oversees and/or administers a wide range of assessment, diagnostic, therapy and/or case management services in a high-intensity clinical environment which requires a high degree of independent decision-making.

Responsibilities

• Assist primary health care providers (doctors, nurses, ambulance, Tribal Court, public schools, local Law Enforcement) in recognizing and treating meth addictions and resulting psychosocial problems.
• Provide counseling and/or psychotherapy to clients and families as appropriate to the position; prepare treatment plans, discharge plans and follow-up care programs; provide therapeutic crisis intervention and emergency services as needed.
• Collect data about patients through interviews, case history and/or observational techniques; evaluate data to identify causes of problems and to determine proper therapeutic approach or referral to other specialists.
• Consult with other therapists and related professional and paraprofessional staff, as appropriate, in the performance of therapeutic and/or case work; refer clients to appropriate service agencies as required.
• Provide and/or arrange for therapeutic interventions as appropriate for patients or clients in crisis condition and for those with serious disturbance problems.
• Refer clients to appropriate social service agencies for financial assistance and other required services; may visit patients and families in their homes to provide counseling and outreach services.
• Follow up to determine reliability of treatment used; change method and degree of therapy when indicated.
• Establish and maintain case files, referrals and other related documents for the treatment of clients; prepare related documentation for civil commitment hearing or other legal proceeding; keep abreast of patient data to ensure appropriate treatment and care are delivered.
• Consult with other legal and treatment agencies and individuals in relation to patient/client records, rights and responsibilities.
• Plan and facilitate community outreach and education activities as appropriate to the position; may serve as a liaison and representative to community organizations, schools, and jail.
• Provide clinical supervision to students/interns as appropriate and/or consulting services to other patient care professionals.
• Perform some administrative functions such as preparing reports and correspondence and may propose changes to program policies and procedures.
• Provide formal teaching, consultation, and in-service training to relevant professionals in immediate and proper handling of and/or referral of a variety of matters.
• Assist the community and patients referred from the clinic in solving or alleviating personal problems which retard or prevent attaining or retaining optimal health; identify resources to use in meeting the health needs of the individual.
• Develop and maintain relationships with all agencies who provide services to Native Americans in the area of Behavioral Health.
• Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology and/or directly related field.
• Three to five years’ experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, preferably in working with Native American populations.
• Licensed Masters of Social Work (LMSW), Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner (LIMHP), or Licensed Mental Health Practitioner (LMHP) in the State of Nebraska or eligible for licensure in the State of Nebraska.
• Must be credentialed per Carl T. Curtis Health Education Center Behavioral Health Department policies and procedures for billing of services under Medicare/Medicaid.
• Possess a valid Driver’s License.
• Must have a clean driving record and be insurable under the Health Center’s insurance.

Skills

• Ability to work weekends and holidays.
