About the role

As a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant at Wexford Health Sources, Inc., you will be the cornerstone of psychiatric care for a unique and often underserved population. You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary treatment team to conduct psychiatric evaluations and mental status exams, prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications, provide psychoeducational counseling, perform AIMS and metabolic assessments, diagnose mental illness using DSM criteria, develop evidence-based treatment plans, initiate crisis interventions, supervise, guide, and train healthcare staff, make clinical rounds, ensure medication compliance, continuity of care, and proper documentation, and advocate for patient-centered care in a secure, structured environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting psychiatric evaluations and mental status exams
  • Prescribing and monitoring psychotropic medications in line with best practices
  • Providing psychoeducational counseling on medication and wellness
  • Performing AIMS and metabolic assessments; reviewing and interpreting labs
  • Diagnosing mental illness using DSM criteria and developing evidence-based treatment plans
  • Initiating crisis interventions, including Crisis Watch placement and use of restraints per policy
  • Supervising, guiding, and training healthcare staff involved in mental health service delivery
  • Making clinical rounds across the infirmary, segregation units, and housing areas
  • Ensuring medication compliance, continuity of care, and proper documentation
  • Advocating for patient-centered care in a secure, structured environment

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited NP or PA program
  • Active unrestricted Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license in state of practice
  • Active applicable Controlled Substance Registration/License/Certification in state of practice
  • Active DEA license required
  • Active CPR certification required
  • Experience in psychiatric diagnosis and medication management (Correctional experience preferred)
  • Strong clinical judgement, emotional resilience, and a patient-focused mindset
