Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
About the role
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
Major duties and responsibilities
- Uses advanced clinical judgment to independently provide evidence-based treatment to Veterans with acute or chronic mental illness including use of psychotropic medications, psychotherapy, and other modalities.
- Provides patient and family education on medical/MH conditions, preventive measures, and prescribed treatments.
- Demonstrates leadership and engages in collaboration with other MH and specialty care professionals while involving Veterans and their families (as appropriate), in treatment plan development.
- Affirms assessments and adjusts the plan of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
- Counsels and treats patients with substance use disorders.
- Orders and interprets labs, tests, and diagnostic studies.
- Initiates referrals and consults to specialty services.

Qualifications
- Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner)
- Basic Requirements:
- Education: Post-master's certificate or master's or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner.
- Accreditation: Approved by ACEN or CCNE.
- Licenses: Full and unrestricted APN license in the U.S.
- Board Certification: PMHNP, FNP, ANP, AGPCNP, or GNP from ANCC or AANPCB.
- Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) II
- Scope, Education and Experience, and Dimension Criteria:
- Education: Master’s or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner.
- Experience: One year of specialized APN (NP) experience.
- Dimension: Clinical Practice, Outcome Focus, Leadership, Professional Development, Professionalism/Collegiality.
- Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) III
- Scope, Education and Experience, and Dimension Criteria:
- Education: Master’s or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner.
- Experience: One year of specialized APN (NP) experience.
- Dimension: Clinical Practice, Outcome Focus, Leadership, Professional Development, Professionalism/Collegiality.
Pay and Benefits
Competitive salary, regular salary increases, potential for performance awards. Paid Time Off: 50 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA. Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).
Work Schedule
