Mental Health Counselor
About the role
The Waukesha County Department of Health & Human Services is seeking a Senior Mental Health Counselor to provide targeted case management and community recovery services (CRS) to adults with serious and persistent mental illness residing in licensed group home settings.
Responsibilities
- Establish, coordinate, and monitor in-county and out-of-county group home placements to ensure services meet individual needs.
- Conduct on-site visits to residential providers to assess client progress, collaborate with providers, and treatment teams.
- Work as part of an interdisciplinary team including clinical supervisors, psychiatric prescribers, nursing staff, and licensed group home providers.
- Build collaborative relationships with clients, providers, and community partners.
- Apply exceptional customer service, psychosocial rehabilitation, person-centered planning, and effective case management practices.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in mental health, including 1000 hours of experience with chronically mentally ill individuals.
- Bachelor's degree in sociology, social work, psychology, or closely related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid driver’s license required, except for utilization review and benefit verification positions.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in sociology, social work, psychology, or closely related field may substitute for one year of experience.
- Two years of full-time experience in a health or human service field, or two years of full-time experience in a nursing program with RN licensure.
- Four courses in sociology, social work, or psychology, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills
Knowledge and application of exceptional customer service, psychosocial rehabilitation, person-centered planning, and effective case management practices are essential.

Schedule and Location
The position is regular full-time, with a work schedule of 8 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with one remote workday per week for the first 6-12 months after start date. The location is Waukesha Co. Mental Health Center.
