Mental Health Counselor
About This Job
The Mental Health Counselor works as a member of the Counseling Services department performing a wide range of tasks related to mental health services including mental health support, crisis intervention, resource coordination, de-escalation and crisis prevention training for faculty/staff and psychoeducational outreach to students. They connect students to internal and community resources when needed, manage care for students with high-risk needs, collaborate with departments like Disability Services or Dean of Students, and provide administrative services as needed.
Minimum Qualifications Required
- Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure in the state of Louisiana. (e.g., LCSW, LMHC, LPC).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a college counseling center operating with a developmental-preventive model and solution-focused model.
- Experience providing counseling services to students from varied backgrounds.
Skills, Experience, and/or Training
- Knowledge and experience in suicide prevention and awareness.
- Ability to lead counseling groups.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work flexible office hours.

Job Duties and Other Information
- Performs individual short-term personal and educational counseling to eligible students.
- Provides daytime crisis care and risk assessment and after-hours when needed.
- Develops, implements, and monitors individualized support plans and referrals for students with mental health and/or behavioral issues beyond counseling center scope of practice: Connects students with community health providers, mental health professionals, and on-campus resources (e.g., Student Advocacy, Disability Services).
- Consults with faculty, staff, family members, and students to navigate university policies and support services.
- Collaborates with Executive Director for Health and Wellness and other partners to promote mental health prevention campaigns.
- Collaborates with CARE team; monitors and responds to referrals.
- Provides de-escalation training and crisis prevention education to faculty/staff.
- Maintains confidential case records, tracks student progress, and ensures compliance with treatment recommendations.
- Provides training and direct supervision of professional staff, graduate assistants and interns, and student workers as appropriate.
- Supports and collaborates with other Student Development departments and participates in various activities within Student Development.
- Provides desk coverage, when needed, and performs other administrative duties as assigned.
- Adheres to ethical guidelines of the University and professional and ethical standards for mental health professionals, as defined by the Louisiana Administrative Code, American Counseling Association, and the Louisiana Licensed Professional Counselors Board of Examiners.
- Ensures compliance with system, university, departmental, and division policies.
- Serves on University committees as assigned.
- Performs other administrative duties as assigned.
