About the role

The Mental Health Clinician provides professional-level behavioral health services within the Police Services Department, including crisis intervention, risk assessment, and case management. The position involves responding to individuals experiencing mental health crises, conducting assessments, facilitating referrals for treatment, and providing support, education, and guidance.

Responsibilities

• Supports law enforcement personnel concerning mental health-related issues.
• Provides resources and intervention to individuals in crisis.
• Conducts risk assessments and makes referrals for treatment.
• Supports, educates, and guides the referred individual and family.
• Manages workload as assigned.
• Works alongside law enforcement personnel in the field.
• Visits community resource facilities.
• Trains and acts as a community liaison.
• Performs related tasks as required.
• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of Police Services Department operations, policies, and procedures.
• Principles, practices, and techniques of mental health counseling, social work, and behavioral health interventions.
• Crisis intervention, risk assessment, and management strategies.
• Case management and treatment referral processes.
• Community mental health resources and support services.
• Laws, regulations, and ethical standards related to mental health and confidentiality.
• Assessments, evaluations, and risk analyses.
• Personal computers, office software, and electronic case management systems.
• Effective communication with individuals in crisis, families, and diverse populations.
• Education, guidance, and support to clients and families.
• Facilitation of community outreach, training, and liaison activities.
• Working relationships with other law enforcement personnel, mental health professionals, and community partners.
• Safety response to individuals experiencing mental health crises.
• Communication in large group settings.
• Independent work and management of a diverse caseload.
• Prioritization and organization of assignments.
• Maintaining detailed records and reports.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

• A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field.
• Current State of Florida licensure as a Mental Health Counselor or Clinical Social Worker under Florida Statute Chapter 491.
• A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field.
• State of Florida Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern license.
• A valid State of Florida class “E” driver license.
• Availability for on-call duty 24 hours per day.
