Mental Health Assistant (Part-Time)

About the Role

This position provides goal-directed support and solution-focused interventions to achieve identified goals or objectives as set forth in the consumer’s individualized treatment plan. The role facilitates services designed to assist consumers with compensating for or eliminating functional deficits and interpersonal and/or environmental barriers associated with their mental illness. At times, the position will provide crisis intervention services to consumers experiencing a psychiatric crisis. Most contacts occur in community locations where the consumer lives, works, attends school, and/or socializes.

As medically necessary, this position aids consumers through direct support, supervision, and/or cueing to help them perform tasks independently. The role reports to the Discovery Program Coordinator.

Responsibilities

• Follow dress code policies of alternative work locations, including schools, jails, courts, detention centers, and other community partners.
• Assist in assessing the needs of assigned consumers.
• Help consumers access community-based resources.
• Assist consumers with tasks related to treatment plan goals.
• Maintain close physical proximity with assigned consumers during group sessions.
• Assist clients in successfully participating in group sessions and activities, and support the program facilitator in intervening with clients.
• Participate in activities to role model appropriate behavior.
• Teach, train, and provide interventions and role models for life skills in group settings.
• Complete annual trainings and 16 KDHE-approved CEUs annually.
• Attend meetings and supervision as directed by the supervisor.
• Complete and maintain proper documentation of time and services within 24 hours.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Pass pre-employment background checks, fingerprinting, and State of Kansas Adult/Child Abuse Certification to provide this service.
• Experience working with behaviorally challenged children with a mental health diagnosis preferred.
• Experience working with preschool children preferred.

Skills

• Obtain Certification for Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB) training. Training is provided and focuses on recognizing, reducing, and managing violent and aggressive behavior through controlled movements, body positioning, and physical holds/restraint techniques. Techniques are designed to be applied by employees of varying physical capabilities while minimizing harm to both the individual and the trained professional.
• Complete KDHE-required trainings and orientation prior to delivering services.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to get on the floor and rise without assistance.
• Full mobility in both arms and shoulders.
• Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
