Mental Health Assistant - Challenger (Part-Time)
About the Role
This position provides support and solution-focused interventions to help consumers achieve goals outlined in their individualized treatment plans. The role involves facilitating services that assist consumers in compensating for or eliminating functional deficits and interpersonal or environmental barriers related to mental illness. The position may also provide crisis intervention services to consumers experiencing psychiatric crises. Support includes direct assistance, supervision, and cueing to help consumers perform tasks independently. Many interactions occur in community settings where consumers live, work, attend school, or socialize. Activities are conducted under the direction of senior clinical staff.
Responsibilities
- Assist in assessing the needs of assigned consumers.
- Help consumers access community-based resources.
- Provide transportation to consumers when necessary.
- Assist consumers with tasks related to their treatment plan goals.
- Maintain close physical proximity with assigned consumers during group sessions.
- Support clients in successfully participating in group sessions and activities, and assist program facilitators in intervening with clients as needed.
- Participate in activities to role model appropriate behavior.
- Teach, train, and provide interventions and role models for life skills in group settings for individual clients.
- Attend meetings and supervision as directed by a supervisor.
- Maintain proper documentation of time and services.

Requirements
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Experience may be considered in lieu of or in addition to education.
- Must be at least three years older than any consumer under the age of 18.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Certification in the State of Kansas to provide this service is required. Annual training may also be required.
- Experience working with emotionally disturbed children.
Skills
- Obtain Certification for Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB) training. Training is provided and focuses on recognizing, reducing, and managing violent and aggressive behavior. MOAB techniques include controlled movements, body positioning, and physical holds/restraints designed to minimize harm to both the individual and the trained professional.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to get on the floor and rise without assistance.
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
- Ability to move freely in the community and in a wide variety of circumstances.
- MOAB training requires the ability to perform physical holds and restraint techniques.
