Member of the Technical Staff, Interpretability

About the role

Output is a startup developing a groundbreaking biological reasoning model that learns at the scale and complexity of life, enabling novel drug treatments. The team is composed of repeat founders and biotech veterans with AI and bio expertise, backed by top-tier venture capital firms.

Responsibilities

• Develop methods to understand what the foundation model learns about biology
• Build tools that make the model's reasoning visible and usable
• Design and run experiments to identify and characterize the model's capabilities
• Create tools connecting model internals to meaningful biological concepts
• Work closely with pretraining and generation teams to refine model capabilities
• Own the entire pipeline from experimental design to production-quality tools

Requirements

PhD in computer science, machine learning, physics, mathematics, or related field with 2+ years of postdoctoral or industry research experience, or a combination of a Bachelor's or Master's degree and 5+ years of hands-on research and engineering experience in model interpretability or representation analysis.

Qualifications

• Strong publication record at top-tier venues (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR)
• Experience analyzing large neural network internal representations
• Proficiency in Python and PyTorch, with experience on GPU infrastructure
• Experience building systems that take interpretability research from experiments to usable tools
• Production-quality code with well-tested and maintainable systems
• Ability to distinguish real model capabilities from artifacts
