About the role
This temporary position is located at 4312 District Drive, Raleigh - Wake County with the Department of Health and Human Services. The office requires coverage from Sunday to Saturday, 24/7, mainly during nights and weekends, and may include working on holidays.
Responsibilities
- Conducting investigations, examinations, and reports of sudden, unexpected, unnatural, or violent deaths within the Medical Examiner jurisdiction
- Determining the OCME's jurisdiction over these cases
- Completing all work related to death investigations as required
- Receiving calls from MEs, hospitals, law enforcement, and other agencies reporting deaths
- Demonstrating knowledge and awareness of hazards associated with scene investigations
- Performing external examinations of decedents, including photographing the body, collecting toxicology samples, physically moving the decedent, and removing personal belongings
- Collecting and releasing physical evidence to law enforcement
- Preparing detailed written investigation reports
- Possessing knowledge of medical terminology and data entry
- Communicating effectively with agencies and families during stressful situations
- Lifting medium to heavy weights or hiking long distances in outdoor and rural environments
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in science (biology, chemistry, nursing, anthropology, forensic sciences, biochemistry, or related sciences field), or criminal justice from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of medicolegal death investigation experience or specialized (e.g., unidentified decedent, etc.) experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Proficiency with current office technology
Pay
Hourly rate of pay: $25.94 (based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application).
