Essential Duties
- Follow the policies and procedures of the facility governing the administering of medications to residents.
- Note and report errors in the administration of medications.
- Absorb and implement procedures or programs to identify medication errors, their causes, and prevention strategies.
- Perform administrative tasks such as completing necessary forms, charts, reports, etc., and submit these as required.
- Maintain a friendly, productive, working relationship with other members of the nursing department, attending physicians, the Medical Director, and pharmacists.
- Report any complaints or grievances made by residents to the Director of Nursing Services.
- Participate and cooperate with facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies.
- Participate in Quality Assurance programs, the Pharmaceutical Services Committee, and other facility committees or programs affecting the medication process.
- Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and topical medications.
- Verify medications brought into the facility by newly admitted residents.
- Maintain proper documentation and destruction of medications according to facility policies.
- Ensure all medications administered are properly labeled.
- Document and remove discontinued medications as per facility procedures.
- Notify the Director of Nursing Services of any drug receipt errors and follow documentation requirements.
- Ensure medications are held for residents transferring from the facility or when medications are discontinued.
- Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed.
- Promptly notify supervisors of any errors or reactions to medications by residents.
- Accurately measure, record, and report vital signs of residents.
- Follow facility procedures allowing residents to self-administer medications.
- Be familiar with common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms relevant to the administration of medications.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs to stay updated on professional developments.
- Agree not to disclose resident’s protected health information and promptly report any violations.
- Perform all assigned tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Complete and perform assigned tasks as directed by supervisors.
- Cooperate with inter-departmental personnel and other facility personnel to maintain adequate nursing services.
- Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information, including protected health information.
- Report known or suspected incidents of unauthorized disclosure of such information.
Qualifications
- High school education or equivalent.
- Licensed Medication Aide with successful completion of a state-approved training program and any necessary examinations.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Reasoning ability to interpret medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms relevant to the administration of medications.
