The Role
The primary role of the Medication Tech is to administer medications and provide direct care to residents. Key responsibilities include:
- Administer medications according to physician orders, delegated by and under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
- Record medications administered in the resident's record.
- Notify the pharmacy (or family when applicable) when medications need to be refilled.
- Maintain a clean and organized medication cart and medication room.
- Monitor and report any/all side effects of medications to the Director of Health Services.
- Obtain/provide shift report. Record sufficient information related to medication administration to implement accurate changes to medication orders.
- Follow comprehensive care plans related to medication administration based on each resident's needs and their comprehensive assessment as assigned.
- Assisting with medical appointments, communicating with healthcare providers, and advocating for the residents' needs.
- Observing residents for changes in health, reporting concerns to medical professionals, and monitoring vital signs.
- Document information pertaining to changes in residents' status, personal needs, and communications with outside providers in the electronic medical record.
- Complete accident and incident reports in a timely manner and according to facility policy.
- Perform delegated nursing services as assigned by the RN.
- Promptly report changes in resident conditions to the Director of Health Services.
- Follow written and oral directions.
- Perform all duties assigned in an effective, cooperative, timely and professional manner.
- Be responsible for the safety of residents under their supervision.
- Work cooperatively with residents, nursing staff, physicians, families, consultant personnel, community agencies, and ancillary service providers.
- Absorb and follow established facility policies and procedures.
- Absorb and assist new employees in following established facility policies and procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality of resident and facility information.
Requirements
- Experience as a Caregiver and Medication Tech in a Memory Care Unit and/or Assisted Living Facility.
- Ability to obtain and maintain active CPR/First Aid Certification during employment.
- Ability to obtain a Food Handler's Card.
- Experience in electronic medical records documentation.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Friendly, attentive, and professional demeanor with residents and guests.
