Part-time shifts: 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM (Monday, Friday, Saturday)
Full-time shifts: 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM (Sunday–Thursday)

About the role

This position is responsible for the safe, organized administration of medication. The medication assistant completes required training, communicates with the case manager (nurse), and becomes knowledgeable in state requirements for medication assistants.

Responsibilities

  • Administer medications to residents using the Medication Administration Record (MAR) as a guide.
  • Prepare medication for each resident’s administration following the five rights: right drug, right time, right route, right resident, right dosage.
  • Ensure confidentiality of resident medication among residents, staff, and families.
  • Document legibly all resident concerns noted during medication administration.
  • Complete resident treatments as outlined in the Treatment Administration Record.
  • Maintain orderliness and cleanliness of the medication cart.
  • Restock medication cart with cups and spoons after all medication passes are completed.
  • Be accountable for medication errors and report them immediately.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and other scheduled training sessions required by your supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Registration as a Trained Medication Assistant (TMA) preferred.
  • Minimum six months’ experience in long-term care or assisted-living residence.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to prioritize, organize work effectively, and adapt to changing situations.
  • Must work as a team member with other personnel and demonstrate good interpersonal skills.
  • Must be punctual with a good attendance record.
  • Must remain calm in difficult or unusual circumstances.
  • Able to make responsible choices and decisions and act in the resident’s best interest.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Able to read, write, spell, do basic math, speak, and understand English.

Physical Requirements

Based on essential responsibilities, in an 8-hour workday:

  • Stand/walk: 1–6 hours at a time, totaling up to 8 hours per day.
  • Sit: 0–1 hours at a time, totaling 0–1 hours per day.
  • Lift/carry: frequently up to 40 lbs., occasionally up to 70 lbs.; height of lift 3–4 feet; distance of carry up to 30 yards.
  • Use hands for repetitive simple grasping, pushing, pulling, and manipulation.
  • Support/assist: frequently up to 100 lbs., occasionally up to 200 lbs.
  • Frequently bend, squat, kneel, reach (up to 3 feet), and climb.

Work Environment

  • Work inside the entire facility, including residents’ rooms.
  • Moderate to minimal noise levels.
  • Exposure to body fluids, infection, odors, and behaviors that may be aggressive, combative, or demanding.
  • Minimum exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals.

Schedule

The work schedule and hours may vary from week to week. Weekend and holiday work is required; overtime beyond the normal schedule may also be required.
