Medication Aide/CNA Dual Certified - Part Time
Part-time 8-hour shifts available on two schedules:
- Evenings / 2nd shift: 3pm–11pm, two-week rotation. Every other weekend required.
- 1st Week: Saturday & Sunday
- 2nd Week: Friday & Monday
- Days / 1st shift: 7am–3pm, two-week rotation. Every other weekend required.
- 1st Week: Friday & Tuesday
- 2nd Week: Saturday & Sunday
About the role
Provides routine resident services using effective, outcome-focused care, including medication and treatment procedures, charting, nourishment, and activities of daily living (ADLs). Documents services and responds to resident needs. The Medication Aide delivers quality care and assists with the administration of prescribed medications within the established scope of practice, encouraging residents to function at their highest level of independence and participate in community activities.
Requirements
- Graduate from an approved Certified Nursing Assistant Program.
- Certified as a Nursing Assistant in Virginia (CNA) and Registered Medication Aide (RMA) required.
- CPR/AED certification required.
- Graduate of a medication training program, including insulin module, and meet 54.1-34-8 Code of Virginia Requirement.
- Experience preferred.
Responsibilities
- Understand resident rights regarding medications, treatment decisions, and confidentiality.
- Recognize emergencies and other health-threatening conditions and respond accordingly.
- Identify medication terminology and abbreviations.
- Implement standard precautions.
- Clean and disinfect as needed; properly dispose of infectious waste according to state law.
- Review administration records and Doctor’s orders.
- Maintain resident medical records while abiding by HIPAA policies and procedures.
- Facilitate resident awareness of medication purpose and effects.
- Demonstrate the five rights of medication administration and follow policy for medication administration.
- Measure and record vital signs, as indicated.
- Assist residents to administer oral medications and document medication administration.
- Report and document a resident’s refusal to take medication and medication errors.
- Store and secure all medications; maintain an inventory of medications.
- Dispose of medications according to pharmacy guidelines.
- Assist residents with medications and treatments as needed.
- Assist with ADLs and document care provided in the medical record.
- Attend mandatory in-service education and complete Relias Learning in-services.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills
- Basic conceptual knowledge of theories, practices, and procedures within medication and nursing assistance, typically acquired through a certified program.
- Basic verbal and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of common medical processes and treatments.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent lifting (up to 50 lbs).
- Extensive walking, bending, stooping, and standing.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple tasks.
- Ability to work inside and outside to make daily rounds and respond to problems and emergencies.
- Ability to lift and move residents.
- Universal staffing, holiday, inclement weather, and flexible work schedule required to meet job needs.
- Exposure to sights, sounds, and odors typical of a long-term care and healthcare environment serving senior citizens, some with dementia.
