Responsibilities

  • Perform waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA, adhering to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
  • Follow established quality control policies and document corrective actions for test system deviations.
  • Identify and address problems affecting test performance, notifying supervisors as needed.
  • Conduct a wide variety of laboratory procedures using manual and automated methods in Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and other disciplines.
  • Perform and document maintenance on instruments and equipment as required.
  • Review the accuracy of patient results before releasing or reporting.
  • Recognize age-specific differences in expected results for patients from newborns to geriatrics.
  • Ensure proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples without collaboration prior to reporting.
  • Perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on patients of all ages, from newborns to geriatrics.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to department and hospital policies related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
  • Serve as Lead Tech in the absence of a supervisor, overseeing the section or department during a shift.
  • Handle responsibilities related to Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Point-of-Care (POC) testing.
  • Complete other tasks or responsibilities assigned by the department manager or director.

Requirements

  • ASCP certification or equivalent (preferred).
  • Minimum two years of hospital laboratory work experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological health science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or meet CLIA educational requirements (42 CFR 493.1423).
  • Current and valid state license if required by the state where the laboratory is located.
