Medical Technologist Lead

About the Role

The Lead Technologist is responsible for assisting with technical and scientific oversight of the department, performing tests, and providing day-to-day supervision of laboratory operations in the absence of the Lab Supervisor or Manager. This role supports staff development, ensures compliance with Gulf Coast Division Standards of Behavior, and maintains the quality and timeliness of testing.

Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day supervision of testing personnel in the absence of the Department Supervisor or Manager.
• Ensure workflow delivers results for stat and priority tests within prescribed times.
• Maintain accurate, legible, and timely reporting of test results, including abnormal and critical values.
• Evaluate technical problems and report them to the Departmental Supervisor or Manager.
• Ensure remedial actions are taken for test systems deviating from established performance specifications.
• Prevent reporting of patient test results until corrective actions are completed for out-of-control Quality Control or malfunctioning instruments.
• Assist with interviews for prospective new employees.
• Ensure appropriate orientation for all testing personnel and medical technology students.
• Evaluate the competency of testing personnel and ensure staff maintain their ability to perform testing accurately and promptly.
• Maintain professional interactions with staff, peers, supervisors, and other hospital personnel.
• Model the Power of One Gulf Coast Division Standards of Behavior.
• Assist in evaluating equipment and procedures; review and revise procedures and maintenance protocols as needed.
• Manage supply inventory.
• Ensure compliance with proficiency testing and regulatory standards (JCAHO, CAP, CLIA, AABB).
• Ensure employees follow safety standards and practices.
• Provide daily feedback to staff regarding job performance and document feedback for semi-annual reviews.
• Assist with staff scheduling, including addressing shortages as needed.
• Communicate with hospital personnel, administration, other departments, and supervisors.

Qualifications

• Two years’ recent experience in the department for which they are working.
• Bachelor’s degree in medical technology.
• MT-MLS certification.
• Detail-oriented with the ability to operate mechanical, electrical, and computer-controlled instrumentation.
• Strong communication skills and ability to supervise Technologists and other staff.
