Medical Technologist - Immunology - Reference Lab

About the role

Warde Medical Laboratory provides esoteric testing in a state-of-the-art facility, populated with highly-trained personnel under the leadership of internationally known pathologists. This is an exceptional opportunity to utilize your education, expertise, and help provide vital knowledge for medical caregivers in Immunology.

Testing includes infectious disease and autoimmune serology, allergy testing, and coagulation. Methodologies used are enzyme immunoassay (EIA), chemiluminescent immunoassay, and immunofluorescence (IFA). Additional responsibilities include instrument troubleshooting, pipette maintenance, and reagent preparation.

Purpose

Performs various clinical laboratory tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Analyzes and interprets test results, ensures accuracy, and repeats tests as necessary, especially those yielding abnormal or atypical results. Notifies appropriate personnel of such results. Provides quality patient care considering age-specific, developmental, and cultural needs of the patient.

Responsibilities

• Follows established procedures and policies to perform all tests pertinent to the assigned section.
• Records and/or enters test results into the laboratory computer; advises supervisor of spurious, unusual, or highly abnormal results before release.
• Reports stat test results and highly abnormal or unexpected results in a timely manner according to established policies.
• Compares test results with previous patient results when indicated, calling attention to unusual fluctuations.
• Performs required quality control, equipment maintenance, and calibration; operates laboratory equipment used in testing.
• Notifies appropriate personnel of problems such as unacceptable specimens, equipment malfunctions, and quality control aberrations.
• Prepares standards, reagents, and other materials used in testing.
• Contacts nursing unit or client office personnel regarding results and for clarification of requests.
• Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships; approaches conflict constructively.
• Maintains confidentiality of patient, physician, employee, and visitor information.
• Performs job duties safely, reports hazards, and ensures personal and coworker safety.
• Provides quality patient care by considering age-specific, developmental, and cultural needs.

• Obtains laboratory specimens from patients while ensuring consideration for age-specific, developmental, and cultural needs.
• Participates in departmental and sectional programs or projects, including research, procedure development, and cost-saving initiatives.
• Assists in the training and orientation of new staff.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related science (e.g., Biology or Chemistry).
• Clinical experience in a laboratory setting preferred but not required.
• Equivalent combination of education and/or experience will be considered for employees with military training or an Associate Degree.
