Medical Technologist I Part-Time - Dayshift

About the role

Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• Evaluates specimens for acceptability for proper testing. Investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens.
• Organizes workload for maximum efficiency in order to complete tests being performed.
• Accurately performs test as requested on specimens received, ensuring correct patient encounter is used and appropriate procedure is performed.
• Verifies accuracy of results before reporting results.
• Accurately performs testing on all Proficiency Testing specimens, adhering to policies and procedures relating to Proficiency Testing.
• Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• Reports results for stats, abnormalities, critical values, and other categories of special requests as defined by laboratory policy.
• Documents special handling required for test results that meet outlying (established) criteria.
• Reports results for Chest Pain and Stroke Accreditation standards.
• Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the Medical Technologist II or Director/Supervisor.
• Performs appropriate quality control for the test procedure and at appropriate timeframes.
• Maintains appropriate supplies for work being performed, and communicates the need for additional supplies/reagents/stock as appropriate.
• Records daily temperatures and utilizes Emanate monitoring system properly documenting according to procedure.
• Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimen's when problems occur.
• Performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, fingersticks, heelsticks) as appropriate for the patient requiring this procedure.
• Accurately performs venipuncture procedures when requested or workload demands require doing so.
• Accurately performs heelstick or fingerstick procedures when requested or workload demands require doing so.
• Uses handheld device to scan wristband, print labels, and scan labeled specimens in to the system at the patient's bedside/chairside.
• Orders are checked to the printed specimen labels to ensure all tests are ordered and correct.
• Labs tubes following established procedure: LIS barcode label, date and time of draw, and collector initials.
• Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job related hazards.
• Completes Education Day, required in-services, required readings, and other competency requirements in a timely manner.
• Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed.
• Maintains work area and equipment in the condition required by department standards.
• Performs daily cleaning of work area. Ensures that supplies are sufficient for ongoing testing. Notifies supervisors when supplies are below established levels.
• Assists with orientation of laboratory procedures for students and/or new laboratory employees, and properly completes training checklists to ensure new employee competence.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant science required.
• Baccalaureate degree in a relevant science preferred.
• One year clinical laboratory internship preferred.
• MT/MLS(ASCP) or equivalent registration, or MT/MLS eligible under Medicare laboratory regulations.
• MLT (ASCP) or equivalent registration or, MLT eligible under Medicare laboratory regulations.

• Ability to troubleshoot instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimen's when problems occur.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of all hospital and patient information.
• Ability to perform phlebotomy procedures.
• Ability to perform venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick procedures.
• Ability to operate assigned equipment and perform all procedures in a safe manner.
• Ability to maintain work area and equipment in the condition required by department standards.
• Ability to perform daily cleaning of work area.
• Ability to assist with orientation of laboratory procedures for students and/or new laboratory employees.

$5,000 Sign-on Bonus offered based on experience
