Job Summary
The Medical Technologist position at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Ctr, Lab CBMC, is part-time and works during the day shift. The pay range is $40.79 - $52.03 per hour. The position is located at 94 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, NJ 07039.
Job Qualifications/Education/Training/Certification/Licensure
- Baccalaureate degree in medical technology or related science
- Knowledge of specialized principles or techniques, normally obtained through a formal four-year college/university academic program
- Registry with a recognized board of registry for medical technology, such as ASCP preferred
- Successful completion of all Orientation Programs
Job-Specific Requirements of Position
- Adheres to safety policies regarding safe handling/disposal of specimens, chemicals, biohazardous materials and sharps; maintains a clean and safe work environment and maintains patient and professional confidentiality
- Answers telephone giving factual information according to the nature of the question and within hospital guidelines
- Assumes in-charge responsibilities when assigned in the absence of Section Supervisor or Senior Medical Technologist
- Completes mandatory education in a timely manner
- Participates in on-going education in service, continuing education, etc
- Completes work assignments by prioritizing tasks, giving STAT requests top priority and performing multiple tasks simultaneously
- Confers with physicians, nursing staff, technologists, clerical staff, phlebotomists and students in regards to specimen or result inquiries
- Determines acceptability of specimens; resolves discrepancies with accessioning personnel, procurement dispatch technicians, nursing personnel, physicians and other personnel
- Enters, deletes/edits and orders in the Laboratory Information System according to a requisition or verbal request by physician or nursing unit; forwards requisition to front office for billing
- Maintains appropriate amount of reagents/supplies by performing scheduled inventory/observing expiration dates; Records lot numbers and expiration dates in designated logs, records data received/placed into use of bottles/boxes/packages
- Maintains positive identification of specimen throughout specimen processing and testing; consults with Technical Specialist/Pathologist when unusual requests are received so that appropriate instruction can be obtained
- Performs, documents, evaluates required quality control procedures; documents corrective action taken or reason for accepting out of range results; notifies Supervisor, if additional action is needed
- Periodically reviews policy/procedure/instrument manuals to ensure compliance; maintains current knowledge of procedures; participates in training/orientation of new employees
- Recognizes situations/results that need to be brought to the attention of the Technical Specialist, Pathologist or Administrative Director
- Verifies that all written/verbal reports are accurate/logic before release; follows defined protocol for reporting critical values; documents results/phone calls on log sheets
Unit/Dept Specific Competencies
- Demonstrates proficiency by receiving acceptable performance of internal and external proficiency supplies
- Participates in the evaluation and correlation of new procedures and instrumentation; performs/documents maintenance according to schedule defined at each bench assignment; recognizes instrumentation failure and notifies Section Supervisor when additional action is required
- Performs routine/complex analytical tests on blood, urine, body fluids and other ordered testing procedure accurately, maintains equipment/instrument and perform minor troubleshooting, as necessary
- Recognizes results that need to be brought to the attention of the Section supervisor, Manager and/or Pathologist
