Responsibilities
- Analyzes and processes biological specimens, organizes workload and sets-up test procedures.
- Evaluates appropriateness of patient and quality control results and enters into the Laboratory information system.
- Strictly follows critical notification policy when results meet stated criteria.
- Maintains inventory and reorders reagents. Stocks shelves. Disposes of biohazards, chemicals, etc. in a safe manner following department procedure.
- Maintains and troubleshoots instruments.
Qualifications
- Must hold and maintain an active, national certification in the field of medical laboratory sciences or technology within 12 months of hire or transfer through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT) or American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).
- A bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science (as Medical Laboratory Scientist-MLS), or Medical Technology (as Medical Technologist-MT), or a bachelor's degree in a science or health related field with national certification (ASCP, AMT, or AAB) may also be considered.
- Candidates holding ASCPi certification are considered equivalent to ASCP certification for international applicants.
- Individuals hired with ASCPi certification are not required to obtain ASCP certification thereafter, provided they maintain active certification and meet all competency and regulatory requirements.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
- Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
- Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
