Medical Technologist

Duties

• Assist in diagnosis & treatment of diseases by performing laboratory tests following established standards and practices.
• Perform pre-analytic, analytic, and post analytic phases of laboratory testing.
• Critically evaluate specimens & correlate all lab results to the clinical picture of each individual patient.
• Prepare the patient for lab testing, accurately label, handle, preserve, process, transport, and store specimens.
• Maintain tests, quality control, & procedures to ensure accuracy of lab tests.
• Perform complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological tests.
• Make cultures of body fluid and tissue samples, to determine the presence of bacteria, fungi, parasites, or other microorganisms.
• Evaluate, test, & match blood for transfusions, & perform blood counts.
• Test for drug levels in the blood.
• Analyze samples for chemical content or a chemical reaction & determine concentration of compounds such as blood glucose and cholesterol levels.
• Evaluate test results, analyze laboratory findings, develop & modify procedures; establish & monitor programs to ensure the accuracy of tests and results.
• Prepare samples for analysis & for tests by cultivating, isolating, & identifying microorganisms for analysis.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field or foreign equivalent.
• Must pass ASCP or AMT Certification.
