Responsibilities

  • Prepare and perform a variety of moderate and high complexity laboratory tests in one or more sections of the laboratory (blood bank, chemistry, hematology, coag, urinalysis, and microbiology) to obtain results used for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
  • Ensure all testing is performed accurately and resulted as ordered within turn-around-time expectations.
  • Complete all required documentation and follow up on unusual and critical results as required by policy and procedure.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff, supervisors, and healthcare professionals as needed.
  • Obtain, receive, and prepare specimens for analysis; understand specimen factors that can affect accuracy and ensure specimen integrity throughout the testing process.
  • Understand the theory behind laboratory methods and operate various pieces of laboratory instrumentation to obtain test results.
  • Perform and document instrument maintenance, calibrations, quality control (QC), and test procedures; recognize and troubleshoot QC failures, instrument issues, and result discrepancies.
  • Evaluate specimen integrity and reject specimens not meeting criteria.
  • Ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, safety, regulatory, and accrediting agency requirements.
  • Maintain continuing education and competency requirements as defined by laboratory policy and certification agency requirements.
  • Proficient in hospital, laboratory, and office computer systems.
  • Assist, train, and orient new staff and students in their respective lab disciplines.
  • Assume temporary leadership role in absence of supervisor.
  • Assist in regulatory inspection preparation.
  • Maintain supply and reagent levels, and practice cost containment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
  • Alternative: Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Chemistry, with transcripts evaluated to meet equivalent education and training as defined in 42CFR 493.1489(b)(3)(ii):
    • At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that includes either:
      • 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; OR
      • 24 semester hours of science courses that include: 6 semester hours of chemistry; 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
    • Successful completion of at least a 50-week official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course AND have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician).
  • Foreign education/training must be accompanied by a primary source verification report from a nationally recognized agency such as NACES or AICE.
  • Master’s in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical, or biological science (preferred).
  • Doctorate in clinical laboratory science, chemical, physical, or biological science (preferred).

Experience

  • Alternative Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Chemistry with documented laboratory training that includes:
    • Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES or CAAHEP; OR
    • 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
  • 6 months clinical laboratory experience in both high and moderate complexity testing as Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Laboratory Scientist (required).
  • Experience must be obtained in a facility that meets the definition of a laboratory and relate to testing of human specimens for diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring.

Qualifications

MLT, MT, or MLS - ASCP or equivalent certification (preferred).
