Medical Technologist

About the Role

The Medical Technologist is responsible for the prompt and accurate performance of routine, complex, and specialized clinical laboratory procedures as assigned by the Laboratory Supervisor. Technologists demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to patients of all ages, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine, complex, or specialized bacteriological, hematological, chemical, immunological, serological, and immunoassay procedures on body fluids under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager.
• Process specimens, perform testing, and report results independently without supervision or prior review of patient results.
• Maintain required competencies in all assigned departments and demonstrate accuracy for all testing performed.
• Observe patient safety, risk management, and infection control policies and procedures.
• Perform related quality control and required proficiency testing according to policy and procedure.
• Maintain competence and pursue personal and professional growth.
• Identify and assist with performance improvement activities on the unit and across service areas.
• Demonstrate fiscal responsibility through time management, reducing waste, and promoting cost-effectiveness while maintaining patient safety and quality of care.
• Actively market services to increase volume and awareness.
• Advocate for and protect the health, safety, and rights of patients.
• Interact with patients and colleagues with compassion and respect for individual dignity and diversity.
• Communicate effectively with care providers (physicians, nurses, business office, medical records) to ensure continuity of patient care.
• Demonstrate positive attitude, personal initiative, and motivation to achieve unit, facility, and organizational goals.
• Uphold professional and organizational standards, practicing ethically and with integrity.
• Fulfill attendance, punctuality, and timekeeping requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Education: Bachelor’s Degree in a Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science (MT/CLS) from an accredited institution required. Alternatively, qualified under CLIA guidelines for MT/CLS.
• Licensure/Certification: MT or equivalent certification (e.g., through ASCP or AMT) preferred, or eligibility to sit for the certification exam.
• Experience: One year of clinical laboratory experience or equivalent clinical lab training preferred.
