Medical Technologist Position Summary

Performs diagnostic testing on patient samples to assist physicians in diagnosing and monitoring disease states. Reports to the Director of Laboratory Services.

Essential Functions

  • Follows standardized procedures and prepares patient samples for testing
  • Collections and analyzes bodily fluids and substances for abnormalities, including blood samples for transfusions
  • Operates laboratory equipment safely and effectively
  • Analyzes test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits; reports and documents findings according to organizational standards
  • Performs automated testing using computerized instruments and equipment
  • Conducts Quality Assurance to ensure accuracy and reliability of equipment and results
  • Participates in performance improvement and continuing education
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Protected Health Information Accessed: Demographic, Clinical, Insurance, Financial, Complete Medical Record
  • Exposure: Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens is present
  • Physical Requirements: Frequent sitting, computer/data entry, and equipment handling; occasional standing, walking, and light lifting
  • Regular exposure to biological and chemical hazards, including blood and bodily fluids, hazardous medications, and latex

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Science preferred
  • Licenses/Certifications: Medical Technologist licensure through ASCP or AMT preferred (licensure must reflect education requirements)
