Job Summary
Duties/Responsibilities
- Administers medication by various routes including oral, rectal, vaginal, optic, ophthalmic, nasal, topical, transdermal, buccal, sublingual, aerosol, nebulizer, and oral metered dose inhalers.
- Documents medication administration, side effects, refusals, and counseling sessions.
- Pre-packages medications for administration in areas outside the medical unit as needed.
- Counts controlled substances with oversight from an RN or LPN.
- Communicates with RN/LPN regarding medication concerns such as adverse effects, non-compliance, or potential safety issues.
- Reports medication errors or potential errors to RN/LPN.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma
- Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) certification required
- 1-2 years of CNA experience preferred
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Completion of medication certification from an accredited program
- Knowledgeable about specific state laws and regulations governing practice
- Ability to follow standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required
Functional Demands
- Passes all required health and other screening tests
- May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays
- On-call duty may be required (available to work on short notice)

- Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities.
- Completes required orientation as directed by the facility.
- Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment.
- Upholds HIPAA and PREA regulations.
- Punctual and dependable for assigned/confirmed shifts.
- Maintains security clearance for the assigned facility.
Physical Demands
- Regularly stands, sits, walks, reaches, bends, kneels, crouches, or stretches for prolonged periods of time.
- Able to communicate and understand both written and verbal communication.
- Able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
