Medical Support Assistant - Hematology Oncology Clinic - Stephenson Cancer Center

This position is in the Hematology Oncology Clinic, an outpatient facility at the Stephenson Cancer Center with 12-15 providers serving roughly 60 patients with various blood disorders and cancer diagnoses. The clinic performs Bone Marrow Biopsy procedures and interventions in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

About the role

The Medical Support Assistant works alongside Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers to provide direct patient care according to state and federal guidelines. This role is vital in the ambulatory setting, performing both clinical and administrative duties while helping patients feel at ease and understand provider instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care by taking vitals, patient history, referrals, and patient phone messages under direct supervision of the provider and/or clinical supervisor.
  • Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on the level of patient contact required.
  • Contributes to the assessment/re-assessment of patients and monitors and documents patient status.
  • Manages large call volume while maintaining excellent telephone etiquette.
  • Organizes workflow to meet patient needs in a timely manner.
  • May retrieve and transport instruments and supplies.
  • Moderate exposure to hazardous risks, including potential for exposure to infections and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment, and chemicals; must follow standard precautions.
  • Responsible for stocking exam rooms, taking inventory, and ordering supplies.
  • Makes scheduling arrangements with other healthcare professionals and facilities.
  • Assists with procedures, including maintaining a sterile field and specimen labeling when necessary.
  • Gathers and documents information about patient condition, including lab values, pain levels, patient education needs, nutritional status, and potential complications.
  • Performs cleaning, sterilization, and/or high-level disinfection of scopes, probes, instruments, and equipment according to manufacturer instructions for use.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience: 0-3 years of experience in Patient Care as a Medical Assistant or similar patient care role preferred.
  • License/Certification/Registration: Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire.
