Responsibilities

  • Interpreting and verifying provider orders and securing hospital follow-up appointments for discharged patients.
  • Receiving admissions and lodgers.
  • Performing patient discharges, inter-ward transfers and transfers to other facilities.
  • Maintaining and prioritizing both inpatient and outpatient appointments, canceling and rescheduling as needed; sending patients to X-ray, lab, EKG, and other clinics.
  • Maintaining the unit’s daily schedule and serving as the main point of contact and information source.
  • Answering multiple calls and providing information to various medical staff, clinics, and patient families; providing orientation to staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Entering and updating medical records, extracting information for review; utilizing Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and Outlook for office tasks such as document scanning, filing, faxing, copying, and ordering supplies and forms.
  • Supporting the care and treatment given to patients on inpatient units including Hospice, Surgical, Medical, Telemetry, Oncology, Psychiatric, Progressive Care Unit, Intensive Care Unit, and the Operating Room.

Requirements

  • Open to all U.S. Citizens. Current permanent Department of Veteran Affairs employees or current permanent Federal employees of other agencies must apply through CBTG-12944298-26-CJK.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Must be proficient in interpreting and verifying provider orders and scheduling appointments.
  • Must be able to operate computerized programs and systems to enter, modify, and retrieve sensitive medical and patient identifying information.
  • Must be able to work independently and communicate effectively and professionally in person, electronically, and by telephone with internal and external customers.

Qualifications

  • No experience required.
  • Two years of education above high school.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities as outlined in the KSAs.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology specific to understanding medical diagnosis and procedures.
  • Customer service skills with the ability to identify and refer customer concerns to appropriate staff.
  • Ability to operate computerized programs and systems to enter, modify, and retrieve sensitive medical and patient identifying information.
  • Ability to schedule medical appointments in a clinical setting.
  • Ability to work independently in accomplishing a wide variety of duties performing patient support work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in person, electronically, and by telephone with internal and external customers.
