About the role

The Alaska VA Healthcare System is seeking Medical Support Assistant (MSA) positions in the Office of Community Care in Anchorage, AK. Applications are valid for up to 90 days to fill any additional vacancies.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with both internal and external customers
  • Establish and maintain medical outpatient and inpatient charts and administrative records
  • Verify third-party insurance and update information in the Insurance Capture Buffer (ICB) system
  • Obtain medical information from patients
  • Coordinate information and actions related to patient care and services
  • Schedule appointments in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines
  • Refer all questions requiring immediate medical attention to appropriate health care team members
  • Schedule, cancel, and reschedule patient appointments and/or consults
  • Enter no-show information, monitor the electronic wait list, prepare for clinic visits, and ensure encounter forms are completed
  • Verify and update demographics and insurance information
  • Process all emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals
  • Perform basic eligibility, co-pays, and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Basic medical terminology knowledge to assist in the provision of care to patients
  • Operate computerized programs and systems to enter, modify, and retrieve sensitive medical and patient identifying information into or from electronic health records and scheduling systems
  • Communicate effectively and professionally in person, electronically, and by telephone with internal and external customers

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: None required beyond basic requirements
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrated knowledge and skills as outlined for each grade level

Skills

  • Customer service with the ability to identify customer concerns and refer to the appropriate staff for a satisfactory resolution
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in person, electronically, and by telephone with internal and external customers
  • Ability to operate computerized programs and systems to enter, modify, and retrieve sensitive medical and patient identifying information into or from electronic health records and scheduling systems
  • Ability to schedule medical appointments in a clinical setting
  • Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties

  • GS-3: $38,495.00 - $50,048.00
  • GS-4: $43,211.00 - $56,178.00

Monday-Friday - 0800-1630

The work is mostly sedentary but may require periods of standing or walking. There are no physical requirements for the 0679 Medical Support Assistant occupation.
