Medical Support Assistant (Advanced)
Summary
Advanced Medical Support Assistants (AMSA) assigned to the VA Clinic McMinnville. The AMSA will be assigned to a Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) model. The PACT Team is a primary care team where the AMSA is responsible for assisting Veterans with their outpatient appointments.
Qualifications
- High school diploma - General Education Development equivalency certificate - or proficiency certificate from a State or territorial-level Board or Department of Education
- One year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level
- Knowledge - Skills - and Abilities (KSAs) related to the technical health care process, policies and procedures associated with interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community, medical terminology, collaboration and communication with medical clinicians, prioritization, organization, and communication skills
- Previous experience as a medical support assistant - working in a call center and/or performing administrative health care functions
Physical Requirements
Typically, the Advanced Medical Support Assistant must be able to operate a computer terminal and manage multiple activities at one time. Work is generally sedentary, however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items. Duties include but not limited to: works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery environment, handles multiple phone lines, develops/maintains effective and efficient communication, performs administrative duties, schedules appointments, verifies orders in CPRS, organizes work independently, and handles administrative and scheduling problems.
Duties
- Works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery environment (i.e. - patient aligned care team - or other specialty care)
- Handle multiple phone lines on in an inpatient care setting - making sure these calls are forwarded to correct staff if needed
- Develop/maintain effective and efficient communication with the patient - interdisciplinary team - management team - VA medical centers - and other agencies
- Perform administrative duties - train other MSAs on correct operations and serve as a preceptor to developmental level MSAs
- Schedule appointments - notifies supervisor when clinic area access is less than desirable or if an individual patient cannot be scheduled within mandated timeframes
- Process physician orders from CPRS and verify orders in CPRS upon completion
- Organizes work independently and handles administrative and scheduling problems and deviations based on personal knowledge of operations and policy
