Medical Scribe

About the role

As a Medical Scribe (internally called Clinic Informatics Specialist) at Oak Street Health, you will support primary care providers with clinical documentation so they can focus on delivering exceptional patient care. Scribes assist providers throughout the patient care journey—from morning huddles to exam-room documentation and post-visit follow-ups. Beyond typical scribe duties, you’ll become an expert in value-based care, chronic condition documentation, and ICD-10/CPT coding, helping providers close care gaps. This role offers extensive on-the-job training in clinical workflows, value-based medicine, preventative care, and population health. Ideal candidates commit to at least 1–2 years in the role, making it an excellent opportunity for pre-med students or those pursuing careers in health informatics, public health, healthcare administration, or medical coding.

Responsibilities

• Documenting Patient Encounters (~80%)
  • Join providers in the exam room to observe and document patient visits in real time.
  • Record structured notes covering history of present illness, assessment, plan, and physical exam.
  • Assign appropriate CPT and ICD-10 codes.
  • Prepare After Visit Summaries.
  • Consult with providers to ensure accurate and specific documentation.
• Clinical Documentation Improvement (~10%)
  • Request and review medical records.
  • Use Oak Street’s population health tools to support documentation improvement.
  • Prepare for and participate in Daily Huddles and Clinical Documentation Reviews.
  • Consult with providers on clinical documentation opportunities.
• Administrative Support (~10%)
  • Place orders and referrals.
  • Address tasks for the provider and care team.
  • Assist with additional responsibilities related to clinical documentation.

Requirements

• Commitment to at least 1–2 years in the role.
• Interest in clinical experience (ideal for pre-med, health informatics, public health, or medical coding careers).

Pay

The typical pay range for this role is $17.00–$28.46 per hour. The final offer will depend on factors such as experience, education, and geography. This position is also eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission, or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay.
