About the role
The Medical Science Liaison/Senior Medical Science Liaison functions as a highly trained, field-based scientific expert in ophthalmology, particularly retinal disease. This role engages healthcare professionals and leaders in clinical, scientific, value-based care, and research-based peer-to-peer scientific exchange around our client’s product. The MSL will interact with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), healthcare practitioners, professional societies, and organizations, serving as the field-based scientific expert for our client’s product in the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), also known as wet AMD.
Responsibilities
- Function as the primary medical point of contact in a designated geographic area.
- Maintain clinical and scientific expertise in ophthalmology, with a focus on standards of care for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).
- Engage in well-informed, compliant, and accurate scientific peer exchange regarding wet AMD and the science behind our client’s product.
- Conduct medical and scientific exchanges with the medical/scientific community, including participation in advisory boards.
- Perform pre-launch KOL profiling to enhance product, disease, and scientific knowledge.
- Facilitate top account/institution profiling to improve understanding of patient care pathways, treatment protocols, and novel therapies.
- Develop and track strategic KOL engagement plans, identifying, developing, and maintaining long-term collaborative relationships with KOLs in the assigned region.
- Support health systems, population health leaders, and medical quality professionals by providing clinical, public health, and scientific information to guide medical decisions.
- Deliver clinical and scientific presentations to healthcare providers, health systems, medical group leadership, and community/advocacy groups.
- Build and nurture relationships with key decision-makers in health systems, medical groups, healthcare provider offices, state departments of public health, advocacy organizations, and professional societies.
- Provide insights into market trends and clinical intelligence.
- Collaborate with Medical Affairs leadership in the development of key opinion leaders.
- Work with clients and thought leaders on a national, regional, and local level to develop clinical insights supporting medical research for new and existing products.
- Identify, attend, and report on local/regional educational events such as national symposia, scientific/clinical meetings, and CME events.
- Manage time and travel expense budgets for scientific exchange and clinical education activities within dedicated regions.
- Respond to and document unsolicited requests for information on clinical initiatives.
- Serve as a resource for investigator-initiated trial (IIT) proposals.
- Provide internal teams with feedback and insights from KOL interactions.
- Represent the client at medical meetings through Medical Affairs Scientific Booth coverage and related activities.
- Attend congresses and develop meaningful internal reports of covered events.
- Adhere to corporate SOPs and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory guidelines governing scientific interactions with healthcare professionals.
- Demonstrate excellence in managing the assigned territory while contributing to the success of colleagues and the MSL team.
- Contribute to organizational goals beyond the geographic territory.
- Provide medical support, clinical input, and training for internal teams as requested.
Requirements
- An advanced degree (e.g., OD, PharmD, PhD, MD, MSN, DNP, or NP/PA) is required.
- For MSL: A minimum of 2 years of previous MSL experience, with at least 1 year in ophthalmology and working knowledge of retinal disorders.
- For Sr. MSL: A minimum of 5 years of pharma experience and 3 years of rare disease or ophthalmology experience.
- Prior product launch experience is desired.
- Exhibits high-level scientific, business, and clinical acumen with excellent communication and networking skills.
- Ability to interpret and present scientific data to engage KOLs.
- Working knowledge of standards of care for wet AMD and ophthalmology screening/wellness programs is strongly desired.
- Ability to present complex scientific, value, and evidence data to payors and/or formulary committees.
- Working knowledge of institutions and clinics in selected geographies.
- Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills.
- Ability to travel frequently (70%) with overnight stays (e.g., KOL meetings, site visits, internal meetings, medical congresses, and training).
