About the role

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) or Senior Medical Science Liaison functions as a highly trained, field-based scientific expert in ophthalmology, particularly retinal disease. This role engages healthcare professionals and leaders in clinical, scientific, value-based care, and research-based peer-to-peer scientific exchange around our client’s product. The MSL will interact with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), healthcare practitioners, professional societies, and organizations to facilitate scientific relationships and collaborations within the ophthalmology community, with a focus on neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).

Responsibilities

  • Function as the primary medical point of contact in a designated geographic area.
  • Maintain clinical and scientific expertise in ophthalmology, with a specific focus on standards of care for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).
  • Engage in well-informed, compliant, and accurate scientific peer exchange regarding the treatment of wet AMD and the science behind our client’s product.
  • Conduct medical and scientific exchanges with the medical/scientific community, including participation in advisory boards.
  • Perform pre-launch KOL profiling to enhance product, disease, and scientific knowledge.
  • Facilitate top account/institution profiling to understand patient care pathways, treatment protocols, and novel therapies.
  • Develop and track strategic KOL engagement plans, identifying, developing, and maintaining long-term relationships with KOLs in the assigned region.
  • Support health systems, population health leaders, and medical quality professionals by providing clinical, public health, and scientific information to guide medical decisions.
  • Deliver clinical and scientific presentations to healthcare providers, health systems, medical group leadership, and community/advocacy groups.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key decision-makers in health systems, medical groups, healthcare provider offices, advocacy organizations, and professional societies.
  • Provide insights into market trends and clinical intelligence.
  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs leadership in the development of key opinion leaders.
  • Work with clients and thought leaders on a national, regional, and local level to develop clinical insights supporting medical research for new and existing products.
  • Support implementation teams as needed.
  • Identify, attend, and report on local/regional educational events, such as national symposia, scientific/clinical meetings, and CME events.
  • Manage time and travel expenses for scientific exchange and clinical education activities within dedicated regions.
  • Respond to and document unsolicited requests for information on clinical initiatives.
  • Serve as a resource for investigator-initiated trial (IIT) proposals.
  • Provide internal teams with feedback and insights from interactions with KOLs.
  • Represent the client at medical meetings through Medical Affairs Scientific Booth coverage and related activities.
  • Attend congresses and develop meaningful internal reports of covered events.
  • Adhere to corporate SOPs and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory guidelines governing scientific interactions with healthcare professionals.
  • Demonstrate excellence in managing the assigned territory while contributing to the success of colleagues and the MSL team.
  • Contribute to organizational goals beyond the geographic territory.
  • Provide medical support, clinical input, and training for internal teams as requested.

Qualifications

  • An advanced degree (e.g., OD, PharmD, PhD, MD, MSN, DNP, or NP/PA) is required.
  • MSL: Minimum of 2 years of previous MSL experience, with at least 1 year in ophthalmology and working knowledge of retinal disorders.
  • Senior MSL: Minimum of 5 years of pharma experience and 3 years of rare disease or ophthalmology experience.
  • Prior product launch experience is desired.
  • Exhibits high-level scientific, business, and clinical acumen with excellent communication and networking skills.
  • Ability to interpret and present scientific data to engage KOLs.
  • Working knowledge of standards of care for ophthalmology, including screening and wellness programs, is strongly desired.
  • Ability to present complex scientific, value, and evidence data to payers and/or formulary committees.
  • Familiarity with institutions and clinics in selected geographies.
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel frequently (70%) with overnight stays (e.g., KOL meetings, site visits, internal meetings, medical congresses, and training).

Pay

If this job posting includes a base salary range, it represents the low and high end of the salary range for this position within the U.S. Compensation will account for comparative cost of living based on geographic location.
