Medical Science Liaison, Nephrology - North Central U.S. (location in IL, MN, WI, MI, IN)

About the role

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) contributes to the Company’s success by utilizing scientific exchange and interpersonal skills to develop relationships with healthcare practitioners (HCPs), including key opinion leaders. The role supports medical education, clinical development, research, and health economics and outcomes research for both marketed and pipeline products, aligning with the objectives of the Medical Affairs team. The territory for this position covers the North Central region of the United States: MN, IL, WI, IA, MI, and IN.

Responsibilities

• Identifies and conducts outreach to key HCPs within the assigned territory to build and strengthen relationships, representing the Company’s interests in medical education, clinical, non-clinical, and health economics and outcomes research.
• Conducts scientific exchange through one-to-one HCP meetings and small group discussions on disease state, treatment options, and—upon approval—the Company’s approved label indications, safety profile, and value proposition.
• Leads and facilitates advisory boards and other activities that inform strategic directions.
• Collaborates with commercial counterparts in a professional and compliant manner.
• Communicates appropriately with internal stakeholders (e.g., Medical Information, Clinical Development, and Medical Affairs) on relevant clinical information and practice trends affecting the Company’s products.
• Responds appropriately to unsolicited questions from HCPs following the Company’s SOPs and provides timely responses to HCP requests for medical information with complete documentation.
• Communicates HCP interest in lifecycle studies to internal stakeholders and identifies potential study sites with capabilities to conduct clinical trials.
• Identifies opportunities for data generation activities through investigator-initiated research, registries, and Medical Affairs or Clinical company-sponsored studies aligned with the Company’s areas of interest.
• Participates in and completes all assigned education and training on the Company’s SOPs, product information, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
• Maintains clinical and technical expertise in relevant therapeutic areas by reviewing scientific journals and participating in educational programs.
• Communicates medical insights and feedback gathered from scientific exchange to define, update, and support medical affairs strategies.
• Manages assigned budgets, as applicable.

External contacts include HCPs (physicians, nurses, and pharmacists), study site personnel, regional chapters of professional societies (e.g., ASN, NKF), and patient advocate groups. Internal contacts include Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs, Commercial management, and Executive Leadership.

Requirements

• Doctoral degree in a health sciences-related field (e.g., Pharm.D., M.D., DNP, or Ph.D.), with a thorough grasp of the pharmaceutical industry.
• 3-5 years’ relevant clinical experience; experience in the therapeutic area is a plus.
• Established relationships with institutions and/or hospitals in the territory; thorough understanding of healthcare and hospital operations.
• Proven track record as a scientific and strategic contributor, innovative thinker, and hands-on tactical performer.
• Ability to work well in a matrix environment with strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills; small company experience is a plus.
• Business and scientific acumen, demonstrated by the ability to communicate complex scientific and clinical data to colleagues and HCPs.
• Ability to deliver high-caliber medical education presentations in various settings and translate information into high-quality medical dialogue.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Pro.

Schedule

This role requires 50% - 70% travel, including overnight travel.

Pay

The base compensation range for this role is $170,000 - $207,000. Base compensation is influenced by factors including time in the role, previous experience, skills, knowledge, performance, work requirements, internal equity, and business/economic conditions.
