Medical Laboratory Technologist/Technician, Laboratory, Blount, PRN, Varied

About the Role

Conducts or supports laboratory testing to aid in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Ensures proficiency and accuracy in all aspects of laboratory testing. Applies professional knowledge of medical technology to these tests, including a broad knowledge of testing methodologies, quality assurance procedures, and specialized knowledge of disease states and clinical significance of tests in the diagnosis of disease.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates mastery of medical technology principles, concepts, and methods related to clinical laboratory procedures and performs testing with precision and accuracy.
• Performs and reports test results for waived, moderate, and high complexity clinical laboratory procedures as assigned and as outlined in standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Uses professional knowledge to solve problems or escalates to the appropriate individual.
• Operates computerized laboratory data systems/applications as assigned and reviews pending work using established protocol.
• Ensures correct policies and procedures in the collection, labeling, handling, and processing of all specimens.
• Verifies identification of the patient, specimen, and results, and evaluates specimen integrity based on department SOPs.
• Monitors Quality Control (QC) and Quality Management (QM) for the assigned area, evaluates QC results for acceptability, and investigates variances.
• Performs lookback if required and monitors supply/reagent inventory, ensuring efficient use of laboratory resources.
• Documents receipt and opening of supplies, monitors expiration dates, and ensures adequate supplies are on hand.
• Operates laboratory instrumentation, identifies equipment malfunctions, troubleshoots problems, and performs maintenance and function checks.
• Understands and complies with standards set by governmental and accrediting agencies in the assigned operational area and performs competency assessments following regulatory standards.
• Assumes responsibility for the operation of the section in the absence of a supervisor/lead technologist.
• Instructs students, new team members, laboratory support staff, and hospital personnel in procedures, techniques, and theory.
• Maintains a safe and clean working environment and responds immediately to safety violations.
• Recognizes customer satisfaction issues and responds or escalates appropriately.
• Communicates information, including critical values, to other healthcare team members and performs required documentation.
• Educates and supports laboratory customers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
• No prior experience required if holding a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
• In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree: Associates degree with MT(HEW) certification or current Categorical (ASCP) (formerly NCA).
• Bachelor’s degree with 60 semester hours from an accredited institution, including either:
  • 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR
  • 24 semester hours of science courses (6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination).
• Laboratory training including either:
  • Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved by ABHES or CAAHEP, OR
  • At least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty performing high complexity testing.
• Meets training and experience requirements defined within Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.
• Foreign degree deemed acceptable following evaluation by The College of American Pathologists (CAP).

Qualifications

• Mastery of medical technology principles, concepts, and methods as evidenced by successful completion of one of the following certifications:
  • MT (ASCP)
  • MLS (ASCP)cm
  • Categorical (ASCP)
  • Categorical (ASCP)cm
  • MT (AMT)
  • MLS (ASCPi)
  • Categorical (ASCPi)
• A current State Licensure at the Medical Technologist level may be accepted.
• State Medical Technologist license required for team members working in Tennessee.
