About the role

This is a temporary position and there are no leave or retirement benefits offered with this position. Temporary employees who work an annual average of 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for health insurance coverage under the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP).

Responsibilities

  • Receiving or procuring specimens
  • Preparing specimens for testing
  • Processing specimens
  • Assisting and/or performing laboratory tests
  • Interpreting test results
  • Monitoring of test procedures, quality control, and test interpretation

Requirements

  • Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.

  • Associate’s degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution or completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course from an accredited institution;
  • or High school or General Educational Development diploma and two years of medical laboratory experience;
  • or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of the physiological processes being monitored and how the medical laboratory science is applied.
  • Considerable knowledge of the test procedures performed in the laboratory.
  • Considerable knowledge of applicable laboratory instrumentation, equipment and terminology.
  • Thorough knowledge of the hazards of working with potentially infectious materials and the appropriate precautions to take to avoid infection.
  • Skill in the use of laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to make accurate observations and make written reports of test results.
  • Ability to perceive colors normally.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Benefits

Note: Permanent and time-limited NC State Government employees must separate from their permanent or time-limited position in order to work in a temporary position. All temporary employees are limited to one NC State Government temporary assignment at a time. Individuals hired into a temporary State job must be fully qualified for the job.

Pay

Hourly Rate of Pay: $22.81 (Based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application). Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification.

Schedule

This position works Monday - Friday, 6:00AM - 12:00PM.
